General Visitor Guidelines

We welcome all visitors to the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts galleries. For the protection and safety of visitors and artworks on view we ask that you please adhere to the following policies: 

  • Please keep a safe distance from the artwork of at least an arm’s length. Please do not touch the artwork (unless a sign or label says its ok). 

  • To aid in the protection of artwork on view, large bags, backpacks, luggage, rigid baby carriers, and umbrellas are not permitted in the galleries. They may be checked at the front desk with the attendant. 

  • No food or beverages are permitted in the galleries.

  • Non-flash, noncommercial photography and filming is welcome and permitted. However, the use of tripods, extensions poles, and monopods are not allowed in the galleries. 

  • Bicycles and scooters are not permitted in the building. Visitors are welcome to lock their bicycles or scooters at the bike racks located on Prescott Street and Quincy Street.

Access

The entrance to the Level 3 Sert Gallery can be accessed by using the ramps on Quincy and Prescott Streets. An elevator is available on Level 1 of the Carpenter Center, and limited number of wheelchairs are available for loan.

Service Animal Policy

Visitors with service animals are welcome to visit the Carpenter Center gallery. The animal does not need to have specific licensing or paperwork presented to be admitted into the Carpenter Center. We ask visitors with service animals to please adhere to the following policies:

  • The service animal must be always under the handler’s personal control (i.e., not passed off to another visitor, whether or not they are the handler’s partner).

  • The animal must be in a guiding harness, a leash, in a bag, or be in some other way tethered to the handler while in the building.

  • The service animal must be housebroken.

MBTA Red Line Stop: Harvard Square

The Carpenter Center is on the east perimeter of the Harvard University campus and east of the Harvard Square Red Line T stop. It is located between the Harvard Art Museums and Harvard Faculty Club, one block north of Massachusetts Avenue, at 24 Quincy Street in Cambridge. 

Parking

Metered street parking is available on both Quincy Street and Broadway Street. Availability will vary. Parking garages are available around Harvard Square.
